Hand luggage packing list - What do you need for your trip?
Depending on where you are going and how long you are travelling for, it makes sense to have different items and documents with you. You will certainly need different luggage on a city trip to London than on a hiking tour in Italy. We have compiled our top tips with items that you should have with you on almost every trip. However, our tips are only a guide and you may need different things depending on your destination.
Which suitcase is suitable for hand luggage?
Step number one: Brainstorm. First think about which bag or suitcase you want to use before you go through our hand luggage packing list. If you are travelling by air, it is advisable to find out in advance what hand luggage dimensions and weight are permitted by the airline in question. You can usually find the applicable regulations on the airlines' websites. It's worth taking a look to make sure nothing goes wrong.
Would you like a new travel companion? No problem - why not choose one of our more sustainable suitcases from IMPACKT? The hand luggage cases in our

Personal documents & finances
Who hasn't experienced it? All of a sudden you need a little something and the annoying rummaging around in the big suitcase starts. The right amount of preparation will save you exactly that. When travelling, it's worth keeping important documents such as your ID card or ticket and your wallet handy in your hand luggage at all times.
- Cash
- Foreign currency, if applicable
- Bank cards or credit cards
- Wallet
- Identity card
- Passport, if applicable
- Visa, if applicable
- Driving licence, if applicable
- Health insurance card
- Pupil or student ID card, if applicable
- Train and/or plane tickets
- Travel guide
- If applicable, important documents regarding accommodation (e.g. hotel booking confirmation)
Toiletries
Even if you're checking in an extra piece of luggage, it's a good idea to have a few toiletries with you. After a long flight, you can freshen up at the airport. It's a nightmare for many air travellers: You've arrived at your destination, but you're waiting in vain for your suitcase at the baggage carousel. It's not so bad if you can do without your luggage for a while thanks to your optimally packed hand luggage.
If you don't have any checked baggage or it hasn't arrived at your destination airport, you're on the safe side if you've stowed basic toiletries in your hand luggage.
As liquids cannot be carried in hand luggage without further ado, you should adhere to the relevant luggage regulations in order to avoid inconveniences at the airport. Only liquids with a capacity of up to 100 ml packed in a transparent zip bag may be carried in hand luggage. Our tip for stress-free and sustainable travel: solid shampoo and soap are not only more climate-friendly due to their mostly plastic-free packaging, but also do not count as liquids in hand luggage. So it's a classic win-win situation.
- Shampoo and shower gel or solid soap
- Deodorant
- Hand cream
- Hand disinfectant
- Brush or comb
- Hair ties
- Make-up
- Lip balm
- Handkerchiefs
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- feminine hygiene products, if necessary
You don't want to do without any of your beauty items in your hand luggage? We feel the same way! Before you get cramped in your hand luggage, think about a beauty case. The IMPACKT beauty case is the perfect addition to your hand luggage - clever and sustainable at the same time. Thanks to the integrated flap on the back, the case can also be easily attached to the handle of your suitcase. Wonderfully practical and with a strong look to boot.
First-aid kit
Of course, you know best which medicines you need regularly, but a few must-haves should not be missing from any first-aid kit:
- Painkillers
- Personal medication
- Wound and blister plasters
- Ointments, e.g. for wounds
- Pest spray, if necessary
- Tick tweezers or card, if necessary
Electronic devices
Admittedly, hardly anyone leaves home without a smartphone these days, so few people need a hand luggage packing list. But if you forget the charging cable or the headphones, it's more than annoying. So here is a list of technical devices that you might need on your trip:
- Smartphone
- Charging cable
- Power bank
- Headphones
- Camera
- Laptop
- Laptop bag or other protective cover
More travel comfort? These items should not be missing from the hand luggage checklist
People who travel to warm places often save on thicker clothing when putting together their hand luggage. After all, they simply won't be needed. But what many people don't think about is that planes and trains are often very chilly - a warm jumper makes for more travel comfort. We have listed a few little helpers that make travelling more comfortable.
- Warm socks
- Jumpers or jackets
- Head or neck pillow
- Glasses
- Earplugs
- Book or magazine
- Sleeping mask
- Empty drinking bottle (preferably reusable made of recycled plastic) if travelling by air, a full drinking bottle is no problem on the train
Corona
Unfortunately true: Corona is now a must on our hand luggage packing list. To avoid any inconvenience, you should find out about the Corona rules that apply in the means of transport and at the destination before you travel. Because safe is safe! You might need these items:
- Op mask or FFP2 mask
- Recovery certificate
- Vaccination certificate (physical or digital)
Checklist: What are you not allowed to take in your hand luggage?
Especially when travelling by air, there are clear rules about what you are not allowed to take in your hand luggage. Although the regulations vary slightly between airlines, there are a few items that are even prohibited by law.
These items have no place on your hand luggage packing list:
- Weapons
- Pointed objects that can be used as weapons (e.g. large scissors)
- Blunt objects that can be used as a weapon (e.g. baseball bats)
- Explosives
- Alcohol with an alcohol content of more than 70 %
Doesn't sound dangerous, but still not allowed:
- Liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 100 ml
- Liquids outside the ZIP bag
